Manelli began singing in nightclubs as a child, and at the age of 19, she made her professional nightclub debut at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

She was working with the musical duo for the first time. Flora the Red Threat earned her first Tony Award as a major performance when she was 19 years old. For a year, she attended Scarsdale High School, where she starred in a production of Anne Frank’s Diary, which later toured Israel. The following year, her mother invited her to perform in concert with her at the London Palladium, and both concerts were recorded and released as an album. She debuted professionally at the age of 17 in an off-Broadway revival of the musical Best Foot Forward, for which she won a theatre world award. Minelli began her career as a film festival trainee in 1961.

She moved to New York City in 1961, where she attended Chadwick School and later High School of Performing Arts. Manelli’s godparents were Kaye Thompson and her husband William Spear, and her first film appearance was when she was three years old, in the concluding scene of the musical Summertime in 1949. From her father’s second marriage, she has another half-sister, Christiane Nina Minnelli. From Garland’s marriage to Sid Luft, Liza Minnelli has a half-sister Lorna and a half-brother Joey. Her parents named her after a song written by Ira Gershwin. She is the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincent Minelli.
